Sakura on the Prairie: Blossoming Connections Between Japan and Knox in the 20th Century

Knox College, since its founding in 1837, has developed a rich history intertwined with many cultures and important historical events. Each of us have a fantastical story to tell, from the students to the faculty.

Several of these portray the relationship and impact between Knox College and Japan. Through the horrific events of WWII, the great 70s, and the dawn of the 21st century, the members of the Knox College community were closely mingling with the unique culture of Japan.

Our exhibit highlights a few of these individual interactions between our students and staff and Japan. These people include: Mikiso Hane, Goro Mikami, Teruo Okada, Stetfan Tanabe, Toshi Yamamoto, Gerald Wumino, and Rose Hane.

We appreciate your time. Thank you for taking the chance to learn more about how this small liberal arts school in the middle of cornfields and open land connects to the larger world.
